Thieves of the Year

Thieves spent around half a year preparing for this crime. The thieves, named “The Mole Gang,” dug a 100-foot (30 meters) tunnel under a busy parking lot in a bold robbery on a shop's cash machine. It took them as many as 6 months to dig the underground passage from a lonely railway embankment to the ATM beside a Fallowfield, Manchester Blockbuster. From there, they pierced up through 15 inches (38 centimeters) of solid concrete before grabbing a few thousand pounds from the cash machine, and easily absconding with the money back down the tunnel.

Unbelievably, the crime came a mere four and a half years after police uncovered a duplicate plot. In 2007, a workman accidentally uncovered an almost identical tunnel –following the same trajectory from the embankment to the ATM – before the crime could be committed. The tunnel was sealed off with concrete to prevent anyone from using it in the future.
The new tunnel, which was 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall, was only yards away from the old one and is though to have been dug during the night.
