How to Illuminate a Village If the Sunrays Don't Reach It?

Viganella is a remote Italian village located at the bottom of the steep Alpine alley near the Swiss border. Each year in winter sun rays cease reaching Viganella, as they get blocked by mountains.

The village is a home of German Buddhist community. The mayor of Viganella is anxious about the fact that people don’t gather at the main square as long as it is dark outside, so he came up with an ambitious project – to place a giant mirror at the nearest mountain peak in order to reflect sunlight to the village.

The construction of the computer-operated reflector with physical dimensions up to 8 by 5 meters cost about 100,000 euros and was financed by local authorities and the bank.
