Female inmates of Maricopa county prison in Arizona volunteer for menial work in chain gang to release from the monotonous life in prison cells. Although chain gangs were abandoned in the US by 1955, Arizona reintroduced the practice in 1995.
Women in prison robes and heavy-duty boots work in the scorching heat outside hacking at weeds or burying unclaimed bodies. Most of the inmates who work in chain gangs are in prison for DUI or parole violation. After a month of hard labor they may be moved from cramped cells to relatively better military tents outside the prison’s building.
